Homemade Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe

Homemade Chocolate Chip Cookies

This Chocolate Chip Cookies recipe is a classic in my household. What was usually a quick Sunday afternoon treat, since I moved to Ho Chi Minh City, it has become quite the phenomenon amongst those we have shared our Chocolate Chip Cookies with. They consistently sell out at the occasional local market and are the most requested for charity bakes and events. Truth be told, anyone can bake cookies like these, and I can only justify their big success with the fact that perhaps great cookies are not as commonly found around Saigon yet, also because making them with good ingredients can be quite expensive. Here’s a recipe that you can follow to make them at home!

Ingredients

  • 1 large egg (70g)
  • 115g room temperature salted butter
  • 110g granulated sugar
  • 110g brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 215g flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 200g chocolate chips (I recommend semi-dark, like 65%)

Step 1 – Preheat the oven to 190°C, it’s the best temperature so they bake slowly and keep the doughy texture we all love.

Step 2 – In the bowl of a standing mixer, combine butter and sugar using the paddle attachment. Alternatively, you can also use a hand mixer. Mix until you have a creamy texture.

Step 3 – Add the egg and vanilla to the mix. Continue beating until you obtain a light, airy mixture. Sometimes, I replace the vanilla with lemon zest, which adds a beautiful flavour next to the semi-dark chocolate.

Step 4 – Add the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Mix until well combined. As you can see, I use both baking powder and baking soda for these cookies. After trying several recipes, using both gave me the best result!

Step 5 – Add the chocolate chips and mix well. I recommend keeping some chocolate chips aside to place on top of the cookies for a decorative touch.

Step 6 – Using an ice cream scoop or a round tablespoon, scoop about 2 tablespoons of dough and roll it into a ball. Place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. If you saved any chocolate chips, you can now place them on top of the cookies. With this recipe, I usually make 12 cookies.

Step 7 – Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 8-10 minutes. Remove them from the oven when they are starting to get golden brown. Let them sit on the baking sheet for 2-5 minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack.

Your cookies are ready! Pair them with milk for the perfect treat for a lazy evening at home, and let us know if you try this recipe!
